Tempe urged to forbid 'A' Mountain displays

TEMPE - For 70 years, camel decorations have graced "A" Mountain during the holidays. A cross and a menorah now show up, as well.
But it was an inflatable ad for New Year's Eve festivities that pushed preserve activists over the edge, bringing them to ask the Tempe City Council on Thursday to remove all displays except the gold A.
"We don't want to make this a religious argument," Gail Martelli said. "Nothing belongs on the butte and it should be treated like the special place it is."
Tempe declared the top of the mountain, also called Hayden Butte or Tempe Butte, a preserve last year. Martelli and others say the city needs to do more to protect the mountain's desert vegetation. They want displays forbidden and the area declared a historical district.
"This is a little pocketful of Sonoran desert in the downtown area," Ellen Martin said. "It is a great outdoor classroom, but I am concerned about the 500-plus petroglyphs being destroyed."
Two members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community asked that only ceremony participants and students studying the area be permitted to leave the mountain's paths.
"Any types of displays or non-natural items should be restricted," Alita Montillo said. "We'd like to see the mountain kept in the most pristine state possible."
Tempe parks Director Mark Richwine said the city is planning no changes to the permit process.
"We limit the locations where displays could occur and we are sensitive to making sure displays don't damage the desert or destroy any cultural or historic resources," he said.
